POP MUSIC: This Week On Tour

After an electric opening run at Birmingham Repertory Theatre, The POP MUSIC squad have headed off on the Barry Jackson Tour – a community tour funded by the Sir Barry Jackson Trust and organised by Birmingham Rep. The tour visits a host of community-focused locations in Birmingham, including schools, libraries, care homes and churches. Tonight they’ll be performing at Northfield Methodist Church.

Ciaran Alexander Stewart plays the role of ‘Remix’ in the accessible performances of POP MUSIC. Once we begin our small scale tour, he will be joining Katherine and Rakesh (Kayla and G) at The Garage in Norwich, Derby Theatre and The Phoenix Theatre and Arts Centre in Borden – three of Paines Plough’s partner venues that are currently committed to receiving accessible performances.

We asked Ciaran to kick off the ‘THIS WEEK ON TOUR’ blog.

“It’s actually a really funny story. My lecturer at drama school said I should consider using sign language as a major part of my career, as he thought I had the potential for it. I told him that I’d already accepted the fact that my career would consist of me speaking at auditions and that would be it. I was wrong. Guess what my first job was as soon as I graduated!

I’m performing the character of Remix, who is integrating British Sign Language into POP MUSIC.

I never thought I’d perform at Latitude Festival – and watch The Killers live. I never thought I’d come to Birmingham Repertory Theatre and perform in their Door space. What a brilliant way to kick off my career!

One of the best bits is chatting to people about their favourite songs from the show, and watching them sing along to “Man in the Mirror,” or “Mr Brightside,” or “I Hate this Part Right Here.” Most of the time, I’m facing the audience and can see them engaging with the music. POP MUSIC is a production that you can totally relate to on a personal level, and having people laugh alongside us is just wonderful.

I’m missing the gang already, and I can’t wait to be reunited with them soon.”
